The 2026 Palarong Pambansa officially commenced on Sunday, May 24, with a grand opening ceremony held at the Datu Lipus Makapandong Democrito O. Plaza Sports Complex in Agusan del Sur. A crowd of 13,000 delegates gathered to mark the start of the weeklong multi-sport competition, which will run until May 31 across various venues in the province.

Participating Regions and Defending Champion

A total of 18 regions are competing in this year's national sporting conclave. Leading the parade of athletes was the National Capital Region (NCR), the 18-time defending overall champion. In last year's edition, NCR amassed an impressive total of 237 medals, comprising 117 golds, 70 silvers, and 50 bronzes.

Top Performing Regions from Last Year

  • Region 4-A finished second overall with 181 medals: 47 golds, 68 silvers, and 66 bronzes.
  • Region 6 secured third place with 44 golds, 54 silvers, and 58 bronzes.
  • Region 7 settled for seventh place after capturing 25 golds, 32 silvers, and 52 bronze medals.

The event promises intense competition as regions vie for top honors in various sports disciplines. The Palarong Pambansa remains a significant platform for showcasing young athletic talent from across the Philippines.
