Filipina tennis star Alex Eala captured her first championship of 2026 after defeating Nikola Bartůňková of the Czech Republic, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, in the championship match of the Birmingham Open in England on Sunday evening, June 7, 2026 (Philippine time).
A Second WTA 125 Title
This is the second Women's Tennis Association (WTA) 125 title for Eala, who first achieved this feat last year. The victory marks a significant milestone in her burgeoning career.
Eala faced a tough battle against her former doubles partner, who was the first Czech player she has ever defeated. Prior to this match, Eala had lost to all 12 Czech players she had previously faced.
Eala's Determination
Eala, currently ranked world No. 37 and the top seed in the tournament, expressed her commitment to further improvement. "Lifting this trophy does not mean I will be among the greats yet," Eala said, as quoted on www.abs-cbnnews.com.
She noted that previous winners of this title include tennis icons such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova, and Petra Kvitova. "So I'm motivated to keep working. I'm grateful for the part that this trophy has played in my journey," she added.
