Lapu-Lapu City Athletes Embark on Regional Sports Journey
A total of 512 student-athletes from Lapu-Lapu City are set to compete in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet, scheduled from March 22 to 27, 2026, in the City of Naga. These young competitors, hailing from both mainland and island schools, are poised to represent their city across various sports disciplines, showcasing their skills and dedication on a regional stage.
Send-Off Ceremony Highlights Community Support
The Department of Education (DepEd)–Lapu-Lapu City Division officially bid farewell to the athletes during a send-off ceremony held on Monday, March 16, at the Hoops Dome. The event also included 130 students participating in the Regional Festival of Talents (RFOT), emphasizing a holistic approach to youth development through sports and arts.
Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King-Chan addressed the gathering, inspiring the athletes to carry the pride of Lapu-Lapu City and emulate the courageous legacy of its namesake hero, Datu Lapulapu. She emphasized the importance of giving their best effort, showing respect to others, and competing with honor, reinforcing values that extend beyond the playing field.
Officials Pledge Ongoing Support and Infrastructure Improvements
The ceremony was attended by key figures, including DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Marilyn Andales, Assistant Superintendent Ronald Ferrer, and Lone District Representative Junard "Ahong" Chan. Rep. Chan expressed his full support for the city's athletes and highlighted ongoing efforts to resolve issues with the local sports oval, which has been impacted by a land dispute involving the Philippine Navy.
He noted that he has requested President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to review and amend a presidential order, as part of the land in question belongs to the city government. This initiative aims to enhance sports infrastructure, ensuring better facilities for future athletic endeavors in Lapu-Lapu City.
Coaching and Safety Measures in Place
The athletes will be accompanied by a dedicated team of coaches, trainers, and teachers who will provide guidance and ensure their safety and preparedness throughout the competition. This support system is crucial for fostering a positive and competitive environment, allowing the student-athletes to focus on their performance.
Meanwhile, the RFOT competitions commenced on March 17 in Dalaguete, Cebu, offering additional opportunities for students to showcase their talents beyond sports. The combined efforts of local officials, educators, and the community underscore a strong commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting excellence in Lapu-Lapu City.
