Senior High Students Navigate Shifting Academic Finish Lines in Challenging Year

For senior high school students entering their final academic stretch, the metaphorical finish line remains visible yet constantly shifting. The conclusion of the school year feels simultaneously imminent and distant as academic responsibilities continue unabated. Between September's seismic activity and November's devastating floodwaters, the educational timeline maintained its forward momentum, arriving unexpectedly at March without fanfare.

The Persistent Rhythm of Academic Life

Aethan Corona, a Grade 12 ABM student at San Carlos School of Cebu Senior High School, begins each morning with the same realization. "Ah, hapit na gyud mahuman," he reflects, acknowledging the approaching conclusion while recognizing the persistent normalcy of daily school life. Despite the dwindling number of remaining days, the routine maintains its familiar cadence.

"All I do is try to get the job done," Corona explains. "It just feels normal." His girlfriend, studying at a different institution but sharing the same academic level and graduation timeline, recently celebrated her nineteenth birthday while still completing outstanding assignments. Though operating on slightly different schedules, both students progress toward identical objectives.

"It feels great to be with someone with the same vision," Corona shares. "To finish school and live independent lives."

Divergent Timelines Across Institutions

Academic calendars demonstrate significant variation between educational institutions. Jericho Montejo, a Grade 12 ICT student at St. John Bosco Cotcot National High School, counts down precisely to March 30, with merely eleven days remaining in his academic journey.

"Sometimes I would reminisce about the previous years," Montejo reveals, reflecting on the passage of time. Meanwhile, Kent Harvey Wamilda at Informatics Visayas faces over a month of additional academic engagement, experiencing a different variety of anticipation.

"Just normal school days," Wamilda observes. "Kind of relieved, for some reason."

Overcoming Unforeseen Academic Disruptions

The academic year that commenced with September's earthquake and continued through November's typhoon should have concluded by this point. Instead, educational institutions implemented comprehensive adjustments:

  • Complete calendar reorganizations
  • Extended submission deadlines
  • Supplemental makeup class sessions

March arrived with academic requirements still demanding attention, while graduation loomed either eleven or forty days distant—the numerical gap feeling substantially more significant than its arithmetic value suggests.

Ultimately, the academic calendar reaches its conclusion. Required assignments eventually receive submission. Within the transitional space between anticipation and achievement, students complete educational journeys initiated under circumstances nobody selected, during a year nobody could have predicted.
