Early Life and Self-Acceptance in Santa Fe
For renowned Cebuano fashion designer Lemuel Rosos, embracing his identity has never depended on following trends; instead, it is a lifelong journey of salvation, creativity, perseverance, and authenticity. Growing up in Santa Fe on Bantayan Island, Lemuel knew from childhood that he was gay. Before becoming one of the most sought-after fashion designers in Cebu, he was a child remembered for fetching water from a neighbor's house while wearing very short shorts and happily taking care of his family members' hair.
Born to a public school teacher mother and a businessman father, Lemuel is one of five siblings. While growing up during a time when conversations about gender identity were not yet common, he experienced acceptance of his identity in the most significant place—within his own home. Ultimately, his parents accepted him for who he truly was, giving him the self-confidence to pursue his dreams without having to hide his identity.
Roots in Faith and the Arts
His childhood was deeply rooted in faith and art. As an active member of their parish, Lemuel served as a sacristan, became president of the parish youth organization, and participated in various church activities. In school, he joined the dance troupe and later became a choreographer. Early on, Lemuel discovered that creativity would shape his future.
His interest in design began unexpectedly in the classroom. During high school lessons, instead of just listening, Lemuel filled his notebooks with fashion drawings. Those drawings became the very first bridge to making him one of the leading designers in Cebu.
Overcoming Challenges and Building a Career
But success did not come easily. Determined to finish college, Lemuel worked while studying, seizing every opportunity that suited his talents. He earned money by choreographing dances and taking on makeup gigs, using his earnings to support himself and complete his Bachelor of Science in Biology. His part-time jobs—which paid for his tuition—became stepping stones to a thriving career in fashion and performing arts.
Today, Rosos is recognized as one of the top fashion designers in Cebu, known for creating elegant gowns and intricate costumes. Beyond fashion, he also leads production teams and manages festival contingents across Cebu, combining his skills in costume design, choreography, and stage production into award-winning performances. Despite this, his journey has not been without difficulties.
