One rainy night in Cebu City, Lina noticed a man lying on the roadside. His clothes were dirty, he was shivering from the cold, and he seemed barely conscious. Many people passed by, but no one paid him any attention.
“Sir, are you okay?” Lina asked softly.
The man looked up slowly. “Just leave me alone,” he replied, his voice filled with bitterness.
But Lina was not that kind of person. Even though her family was poor and she sold vegetables at the market every day, she brought the man to their small home. She gave him food, a clean blanket, and a warm cup of coffee.
The man’s name was Marco. At first, he was quiet and easily angered. Sometimes he would disappear for days and return drunk or shaking from drug use. Even though it broke her heart, Lina never stopped caring for him.
“Marco, it’s not too late,” she would always say. “There is still someone who believes in you.”
Little did Lina know that Marco was once a doctor. He was a respected surgeon at a private hospital. But after his wife died in an accident, he became addicted to drugs, until his family disowned him and he lost his job.
With each day Lina spent with him, Marco slowly began to change. Because of her patience, care, and unwavering encouragement, he started to quit his vices. The process was difficult; there were nights when he would cry in pain and longing for drugs, but Lina was always by his side.
“Why aren’t you tired of me?” Marco asked one night.
Lina smiled. “Because I see that you are a good person. You just lost your way.”
Months later, Marco found a job as an assistant at a clinic while rebuilding his life. Lina was amazed by his medical knowledge until she discovered his true identity.
“You’re a doctor?” she asked in surprise.
Marco bowed his head. “I was. But you brought me back to myself.”
When the light returned to Marco’s life, his feelings for Lina grew stronger. Not because she helped him, but because of her heart full of love and hope despite poverty.
One afternoon, as they watched the sunset, Marco held Lina’s hand.
“I don’t have a lot of money to give,” Marco said, “but I want to be with you for the rest of my life.”
Tears fell from Lina’s eyes as she smiled.
Because sometimes, love is not found in wealth or a perfect life, but in the person who stays by your side during your lowest moments.
