Cleaner air expected in Cebu this weekend after Kanlaon ash

The Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) announced that cleaner air is expected to return to Cebu by the end of the weekend. According to PDRRMO Head Dennis Pastor on Friday, July 10, 2026, information received from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) indicates that atmospheric conditions are likely to improve after the recent ash and smoke emissions from Kanlaon Volcano.

Current Air Quality Status

Pastor added that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) 7 reported “fair” air quality in Cebu on Friday morning. The DENR-EMB 7 public advisory stated that the effects of the Kanlaon Volcano eruption continue, with ashfall incidents reported along the wind trajectory. Atmospheric simulations using the NOAA HYSPLIT model show that air parcels and volcanic emissions are moving eastward, directly affecting parts of Central Cebu.

Despite ongoing volcanic emissions, environmental monitoring instruments confirmed that levels of fine and coarse particulate matter remained within safe guideline values as of Friday morning.

Monitoring Data from Key Cities

Air quality monitoring data from Talisay City showed that fine particulate matter levels were classified as “fair,” while coarse particulate matter was classified as “good.” In Toledo City, both fine and coarse particulate matter levels were recorded with safe air quality ratings, both classified as “good.” Additional data from the state weather bureau indicated high ambient temperatures and moderate wind speeds from the southwest.

Health Advisories

To minimize health risks until conditions fully improve, authorities continue to urge residents to wear face masks, preferably N95 respirators, when going outdoors. The public is also advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors, protect their eyes, and drink plenty of water. The DENR-EMB 7 further advised families to closely monitor vulnerable household members, especially those with asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
