Kanlaon Eruption Triggers Class Suspensions Across Cebu and Negros
Kanlaon Eruption Hits Cebu, Class Suspensions Declared

Kanlaon Volcano erupted again at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026, in Negros Oriental, sending ash across the sea to Cebu and prompting immediate class suspensions in multiple localities. The eruption, described as the strongest since June 3, 2024, affected areas up to 151 kilometers away, covering vehicles and rooftops with fine volcanic debris.

Class Suspensions and Affected Areas

Within hours of the eruption, local governments declared class suspensions in Canlaon City, La Carlota City, and La Castellana in Negros, as well as in over 20 areas in Cebu, including Toledo, Balamban, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Cebu City. The ashfall reached Toledo City first, then spread to Cebu City, where freshly cleaned cars quickly became coated with ash.

This event brought back bitter memories of the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, which sent ash 125 kilometers to Sta. Mesa, Manila. The Kanlaon ash traveled 151 kilometers across the sea to reach Cebu, highlighting the volcano's immense power.

Health Warnings and Precautions

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival urged the public to wear face masks when going outside, especially children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with respiratory illnesses, to avoid the harmful effects of ash. Volcanic ash is not ordinary dust; it consists of fine glass and sharp particles that can damage the lungs. The sight of many people wearing masks on the streets shows that lessons from past disasters and the pandemic have been learned.

According to the mayor, the ashfall is a serious health risk, and discipline and mutual care are essential. He emphasized that the volcano respects no boundaries or islands when it erupts.

Preparedness and Community Response

The Kanlaon eruption serves as a wake-up call for continued vigilance. While rain is expected to wash away the ash from roofs and streets, as happened after Pinatubo, the most important protection now is public discipline, adherence to health advisories, and looking out for one another. Authorities are monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed.
