Barge Crash Threatens Coastal Community in Lapu-Lapu
A large barge identified as Golden Star 7 drifted toward Caubian Island in Lapu-Lapu City during the early hours of Monday, November 10, 2025, causing significant damage to the island's protective seawall. The incident occurred around 4:00 AM amid strong tidal conditions and southwest monsoon winds.
Immediate Impact and Response
According to Barangay Caubian Councilor Kathy Meyers, who confirmed the incident to SunStar Cebu, the seawall sustained substantial damage from the impact. Councilor Meyers emphasized that without this crucial coastal defense structure, residential properties along the eastern side of the island would have been completely swept away by the powerful waters.
The vessel involved has a history of similar incidents, having previously drifted near Nasingin Island and Pandanon area during Typhoon Odette, indicating potential ongoing maritime safety concerns.
Government Action and Environmental Concerns
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" Chan has taken immediate action by directing the City Engineering Office to conduct a thorough inspection of the affected area. The mayor has formally requested the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to collaborate on a comprehensive damage assessment.
This coordinated effort will include participation from the Coast Guard and the Coastal Resource Management Office of Lapu-Lapu City to ensure proper evaluation and response.
Mayor Chan has also prioritized investigating potential oil leakage from the collision, recognizing the critical importance of marine environmental protection for Caubian Island residents who depend on the surrounding waters for their fishing livelihoods.
The incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of coastal communities to maritime accidents and the essential role that infrastructure like seawalls plays in protecting island residents from natural forces and man-made disasters.
