A landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall struck the remote village of Ngingir in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur, early Friday, July 10, 2026, resulting in five fatalities, two injuries, and six people still missing, according to the Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office (LDSPPO).
Incident details
The LDSPPO reported that the landslide occurred around 2:30 a.m. in Ngingir village, Calanogas town. The victims were residents of the area who were buried instantly when a large volume of soil collapsed due to prolonged heavy rainfall associated with the southwest monsoon, enhanced by Super Typhoon Inday.
Among the missing, the police identified two individuals with the surname Abdulrasid, two with the family name Ali, and one each with the surnames Abdulmajid and Arab. The bodies of the five deceased have been recovered, while two injured survivors are receiving medical attention.
Response and rescue efforts
Responders arrived at the landslide scene on foot at 6 a.m., as roads leading to the area were impassable to vehicles. The LDSPPO stated, “Responders secured the incident site and conducted manual excavation and mechanical digging to extricate the victims trapped beneath the debris.”
The rescue operation involves personnel from the Calanogas Municipal Police Station, Bureau of Fire Protection, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, local government unit, barangay officials, and volunteers. Search, rescue, and retrieval operations remain ongoing as of Friday afternoon.
Cause and background
Initial investigation by the LDSPPO confirmed that the landslide was caused by continuous heavy rainfall, which led to the collapse of a large volume of soil. The rains were attributed to the enhanced southwest monsoon brought by Super Typhoon Inday, which has been affecting parts of Mindanao.
