Typhoon-Intensified Inferno Ravages Bato Community

A devastating fire, amplified by the powerful winds of Super Typhoon Uwan, swept through Barangay Iniguihan (Poblacion) in Bato, Leyte, on Sunday, November 9, 2025. The blaze resulted in the complete destruction of more than 80 houses, leaving a trail of destruction in the storm-battered municipality.

Rapid Spread and Emergency Response

The fire initially ignited at approximately 4:20 a.m. at the residence of an individual locally known as "Elong." Investigators confirmed that the inferno spread with alarming speed, primarily driven by the intense winds of the concurrent super typhoon. The combined efforts of the Bato Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) were immediately deployed to the scene.

They were significantly bolstered by firefighting teams from neighboring towns, including BFP Matalom, Hilongos, Bontoc, Inopacan, Maasin, Sogod, Hindang, and Baybay, alongside local barangay responders. This coordinated multi-agency response was crucial in preventing further devastation and protecting adjacent households.

Containment and Aftermath

After a grueling battle against the wind-whipped flames, firefighters successfully declared the fire under control at 6:45 a.m. In a remarkable and fortunate outcome, no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident. Authorities swiftly transitioned to damage assessment and began providing necessary assistance to the families who lost their homes.
