Widespread Displacement as Typhoon Uwan Batters Central Luzon
The powerful force of Super Typhoon "Uwan" has led to a massive humanitarian crisis in Central Luzon, with disaster officials confirming that more than 26,000 families have been displaced across the region's seven provinces. The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Central Luzon (RDRRMC-3) reported the staggering figures in its 8 a.m. update on Monday, November 10.
Evacuation and Shelter Statistics
According to the RDRRMC-3's consolidated data, a total of 26,596 families, equivalent to 88,059 individuals, were forced to abandon their homes to escape the typhoon's devastating impact. The council detailed that the vast majority of these evacuees, approximately 23,725 families or 78,604 individuals, are currently being housed in various evacuation centers set up by local government units.
Meanwhile, another 2,871 families, comprising 9,455 people, have sought temporary refuge with relatives or friends. These displaced residents hail from the provinces of Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales, all of which felt the brunt of Uwan's torrential rains and powerful winds from Sunday evening through Monday.
Regional Impact and Ongoing Response
The number of evacuated families represents a significant portion of the typhoon's overall impact. The RDRRMC-3 revealed that Uwan has affected a total of 44,998 families or 158,697 individuals throughout the entire Central Luzon region. The typhoon's onslaught triggered severe flooding and infrastructure damage, prompting a swift government response.
Local disaster risk reduction and management offices have been actively conducting rescue and relief operations since Saturday night, working tirelessly to assist affected communities. To accommodate the thousands of displaced families, local government units have opened hundreds of evacuation centers. The RDRRMC-3 continues to assess the full extent of the damage as reports from local disaster units are consolidated.
