The Philippine government has successfully repatriated over 1,400 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dependents from the Middle East, where escalating hostilities among neighboring states have created a volatile regional crisis. According to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), a total of 1,420 individuals have been brought home since the conflict began in the Gulf region.
Government Efforts in Repatriation
In an official statement, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized the government's ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of Filipinos abroad. "The government continues to have flights for Filipinos, especially OFWs and their dependents, who wish to return home due to the situation in the Middle East," Cacdac stated. The repatriation efforts have utilized a combination of commercial flights and three chartered flights specifically arranged by the Philippine government.
Recent Arrivals and Breakdown
Not included in the initial total are more than 300 additional OFWs who arrived home on Monday via a chartered flight from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The DMW disclosed that this flight, Philippine Airlines PR8502, landed at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City, carrying 317 OFWs and 26 dependents.
A comprehensive breakdown of the repatriated individuals reveals:
- 108 OFWs from Saudi Arabia
- 89 OFWs from Kuwait
- 66 OFWs from Bahrain
- 54 OFWs from Qatar
Dependents repatriated include 13 from Bahrain, 10 from Kuwait, 2 from Qatar, and 1 from Saudi Arabia.
Comprehensive Assistance Provided
Prior to departure, OFWs were provided with temporary hotel accommodations and organized travel arrangements to ensure their security. Upon arrival in the Philippines, the DMW has implemented a robust support system that includes:
- Temporary accommodation for repatriated OFWs and their families
- Transportation assistance, including domestic flight facilitation
- Psycho-social counseling services
- Food assistance programs
- Reintegration services to help with employment and settlement
- Special financial assistance to address immediate needs
The DMW reiterated its commitment to affected Filipinos, stating: "We aim to provide prompt assistance to Filipinos affected by the Middle East crisis and to ensure that government services are extended to them in every way at all times."
The repatriation initiative underscores the Philippine government's proactive response to international crises affecting its citizens abroad, with continued monitoring of the situation in the Middle East and readiness to assist additional OFWs seeking to return home.
