Over 150 Additional OFWs Safely Return Amid Middle East Hostilities
In a significant repatriation effort, more than 150 additional overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from the Middle East have safely returned home on Thursday, March 19, 2026. This development comes as hostilities continue to escalate across the region, prompting urgent government action to ensure the safety of Filipino nationals abroad.
Government-Chartered Flight Brings Home 317 Filipinos
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed that the returning OFWs were part of a larger group of 317 Filipinos brought home via a Philippine government-chartered flight originating from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. According to the DMW statement, the repatriated individuals included 153 OFWs accompanied by 114 dependents, along with 50 stranded Filipino passengers who chose to return due to the ongoing tensions.
This latest flight marks a continuation of the government's comprehensive repatriation program, which has now successfully returned a total of 2,099 OFWs and their dependents to the Philippines since March 5, 2026. The DMW emphasized that all repatriated workers received immediate financial and welfare assistance upon arrival, including essential medical and psychosocial support services to help them reintegrate.
Extended Risk Zone Designation for Seafarers
In a related security development, the DMW has officially designated the Coast of Israel as an "Extended Risk Zone" for Filipino seafarers. This designation, outlined in Advisory No. 14-2026, follows the decision of the Warlike Operations Area Committee (WOAC) of the International Bargaining Forum (IBF).
The DMW clarified that this designation will remain in effect from March 13, 2026, to March 23, 2026, with possible extensions subject to mutual agreement between IBF parties. Under this classification, Filipino seafarers operating in the area will be entitled to a bonus equal to their basic wage, payable specifically on days when their vessel comes under attack.
Furthermore, the department noted that compensation for death and disability will be doubled if such incidents occur on the day of an attack. This move follows earlier designations of the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Strait of Hormuz as War-like Operations Areas earlier in the month, reflecting the government's proactive approach to maritime security.
Ongoing Repatriation Efforts and Regional Concerns
The escalating situation in the Middle East has prompted increased vigilance from Philippine authorities, who continue to monitor developments closely. The DMW's coordinated efforts demonstrate the government's commitment to protecting Filipino workers abroad, particularly in conflict-prone regions.
As tensions persist, the department remains prepared to facilitate additional repatriation flights if necessary, ensuring that OFWs have safe passage home. The welfare of these workers remains a top priority, with continued assistance programs aimed at supporting their transition back to Philippine society.
