9 Pinoy Seafarers Freed by Houthis Return Home

Nine Filipino seafarers have finally returned to the Philippines, filled with joy despite the hardships they endured during five months of captivity. The crew members of the MV Eternity C arrived home on the evening of Thursday, December 4, 2025, according to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

A Long-Awaited Homecoming

In a television interview on Friday, OWWA Deputy Administrator Jasmine Gapatan shared that the nine Filipino seafarers, who were released by Houthi rebels, were overjoyed to be reunited with their families. The crew of the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier is now safely back in their homes across the Philippines.

Their return marks the end of a harrowing five-month ordeal that began in July 2025. The seafarers were captured when Houthi rebels attacked the MV Eternity C in the Red Sea. Their release and subsequent journey home culminated in the emotional reunion on Thursday night.

Government Support and Thanksgiving

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) hosted a Thanksgiving Mass and a luncheon for the returning Filipino seafarers and their families this past Friday. This event served as an official welcome and a moment of gratitude for their safe return.

Deputy Administrator Gapatan stated that the seafarers will be informed about the various government programs and assistance available to them. This comprehensive support package is designed to aid in their recovery and reintegration.

Comprehensive Aid Package for Recovery

The assistance offered by the government through OWWA covers multiple critical areas to ensure the seafarers' well-being. The key components of the support program include:

  • Financial assistance for immediate needs.
  • Psychosocial and medical support to address the mental and physical impact of their captivity.
  • Programs for reintegration back into community and family life.
  • Job referrals to help them find future employment.
  • Business counseling for those considering entrepreneurship.
  • Financial literacy training to help them manage their resources effectively.

This multi-faceted approach underscores the government's commitment to supporting overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), especially those who face extreme situations. The safe return of the MV Eternity C crew is a relief to their families and a reminder of the ongoing risks faced by Filipino seafarers in global conflict zones.
