In a proactive move to safeguard its citizens abroad, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Butuan City has initiated a critical coordination meeting with key national agencies to address the needs of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Butuan employed in the Middle East who are expressing a desire to return to the Philippines. This meeting, held recently, brought together representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to formulate a comprehensive crisis intervention strategy.
Focus on Preparedness and Coordination
The primary objective of this gathering was to prepare for potential repatriation efforts and identify appropriate measures to protect the welfare of OFWs who might be impacted by the escalating tensions in the Middle East region. Butuan City Mayor Lawrence Fortun actively participated in the discussions, emphasizing the importance of establishing a clear coordination mechanism should the need arise to bring OFWs back to the Philippines. The officials are considering the activation of a dedicated Crisis Management Task Force, which would involve close collaboration between the local government and the relevant national agencies to ensure a swift and organized response.
Addressing Immediate Concerns
The meeting underscored the local government’s commitment to its constituents working overseas, highlighting plans to provide necessary support, including logistical assistance and welfare services, for those affected. By aligning with DMW, OWWA, and DOLE, Butuan City aims to create a robust framework that can effectively manage any crisis situation, ensuring the safety and well-being of Butuanon OFWs during this period of uncertainty.
