Filipino Community Mourns as OFW Confirmed Among Fire Victims
The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong confirmed with heavy hearts that an overseas Filipino worker was among those who lost their lives in the devastating Tai Po district fire that occurred on Wednesday afternoon, November 26, 2025.
The consulate expressed profound sadness over the passing of the Filipina worker, acknowledging her countless sacrifices made far from home to provide a better future for her family back in the Philippines.
In their official statement, the consulate extended deepest condolences to the victim's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult period while assuring that ground operations continue to ensure the welfare of other affected Filipino workers.
Current Status of Other Filipino Nationals
According to the latest verification efforts, 79 Filipinos have been confirmed safe following the tragic incident at Wang Fuk Court residential complex.
The consulate reported that one Filipino national sustained injuries during the fire, while the status of 12 other overseas Filipino workers remains under verification as rescue and identification operations continue.
DMW Secretary Visits Victim's Family
Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac personally visited the family of the deceased OFW, who leaves behind a 10-year-old son.
Secretary Cacdac comforted the young boy, assuring him that his mother would forever live in his heart and would have wanted nothing more than for him to complete his education.
In a touching moment that highlighted the child's resilience, when asked about his future aspirations, the boy responded: "Firefighter po para wala na pong mamatay sa sunog" (I want to be a firefighter so no one else will die in fires).
Widespread Impact and Ongoing Investigation
The fire at Wang Fuk Court has resulted in at least 128 confirmed fatalities, including one firefighter who died while performing rescue operations.
Approximately 200 individuals remain unaccounted for as emergency services continue their search and recovery efforts in the affected residential area.
Hong Kong authorities have taken 11 individuals into custody in connection with the incident, including two directors from Will Power Architects Company, the consultancy firm responsible for the renovation project at Wang Fuk Court where the fire originated.
