President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called on the Canadian government to make its new migration policy clear and transparent so that Filipinos currently in Canada can understand their status. According to the President, the quota for Filipino workers has been reduced, and certain parts of the new law remain unclear.
Marcos seeks clarity, not changes
Marcos emphasized that he is not asking Canada to alter its laws but only to clarify the rules. “All we were asking is that to make very clear and very transparent exactly what the rules are, so that the Filipinos here who are already in Canada know their status. We just want to make sure they have been here,” he said.
The President noted that he has spoken with several Filipinos who have long resided and worked in Canada, making it essential to ensure their status is not adversely affected.
Impact on Philippine adjustment
Marcos added that a clear policy would help the Philippines adjust to Canada’s new regulations. “The reason that we spoke about that is that there has been a change in the law here in Canada when it comes to the migration. To begin with, the quota for Filipino workers has been lessened. But there are still areas of the new law that are unclear to us. And that’s really what I can say. Of course, it would be highly improper for me to suggest any changes in another country’s law,” he stated.
