President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. personally led a special Christmas celebration for returning Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families at Malacañan Palace in Manila last Friday. The event, known as "Tara sa Palasyo," was designed to bring holiday cheer and recognition to the nation's migrant workers.
A Presidential Salute to Modern-Day Heroes
In a heartfelt Facebook post on Saturday, President Marcos emphasized that Christmas is a time for gratitude and caring for Filipinos who continuously sacrifice for their families and the country. He specifically honored OFWs, whom he described as the nation's "bag-ong bayani" or "new heroes."
"In our Pamaskong Handog for Overseas Filipino Workers, we sincerely extend our gratitude as a reminder that they are not alone and that there is a government always ready to support our New Heroes," stated Marcos, while also conveying his Christmas greetings to the workers and their loved ones.
The gathering at the Kalayaan Grounds of the Palace is part of the administration's ongoing effort to honor the immense sacrifices made by OFWs. These individuals work abroad not only to support their families but also to contribute significantly to the Philippine economy.
Festivities and Family Bonding at the Palace
The celebration, now in its fourth year, transforms the Palace grounds into a festive public space. Organized by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) with assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the event welcomed approximately 400 OFWs and their family members.
The program was packed with activities focused on family bonding and entertainment, including:
- A live performance by the top three winners of the OWWA Duets Singing Competition 2025.
- A special film screening of the classic movie "Anak," directed by Rory Quintos and starring Vilma Santos and Claudine Barretto. The film was chosen as a tribute to the sacrifices of OFWs and the families they leave behind.
- Carnival rides for children, live music, and a variety of local Christmas food.
Sustained Government Commitment to OFWs
The "Tara sa Palasyo" initiative underscores a tangible commitment from the national government to stay connected with the OFW community. By opening the doors of the Malacañan Palace, the event creates a symbolic and joyful space for direct appreciation.
President Marcos's active participation—welcoming attendees and joining in the activities—sent a powerful message of solidarity. The event serves as an annual reminder that the contributions and well-being of overseas workers remain a priority for the administration, especially during the holiday season when being away from home is felt most deeply.
