President Marcos Welcomes 343 OFWs Repatriated from Middle East Amid Conflict

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. personally welcomed 343 overseas Filipino workers repatriated from the Middle East on Monday, March 23, 2026, as the government escalates its evacuation efforts in response to the ongoing regional conflict. The repatriates arrived at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City aboard the fourth government-chartered flight, which originated from Saudi Arabia.

Repatriation Details and Land Travel Challenges

Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed that the group included Filipinos from Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that many of these individuals had to undertake arduous land travel due to airspace restrictions, with journeys averaging seven to eight hours to reach Riyadh for their flight to Manila.

"We have 343 on the fourth charter flight from Saudi Arabia... 234 came from Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain," Cacdac stated. "They would not have reached Saudi Arabia if not for the land crossing efforts." The flight also carried approximately 10 to 15 dependents, including children.

Government Assistance and Future Repatriation Plans

Returning OFWs will receive comprehensive government support, including:

  • Temporary accommodation and transportation assistance
  • Financial aid for immediate needs
  • Arrangements for travel to their home provinces

Cacdac assured that funds for repatriation and reintegration programs remain sufficient at this time. The government is actively preparing for additional evacuation flights, with fifth and sixth chartered flights expected from the United Arab Emirates, which hosts a significant Filipino population.

Ongoing Response to Regional Tensions

This repatriation initiative represents a critical component of the government's broader response to ensure the safety of Filipinos affected by escalating tensions in the Middle East. The coordinated effort demonstrates the administration's commitment to protecting overseas workers during international crises.
