The Philippine Consulate General confirmed with great sadness the passing of the Filipino worker who had made countless sacrifices far from her homeland to provide a better future for her family. The consulate extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
Rescue Operations and Filipino Casualties
Rescue operations continue as authorities work to ensure the welfare and provide assistance to OFWs affected by the tragedy. Official reports indicate that 79 Filipinos have been confirmed safe following the incident, with one injured and the status of 12 other OFWs still under verification.
The death toll from the catastrophic fire has reached at least 128 people, including one firefighter, while the condition of approximately 200 individuals remains under investigation.
Heartbreaking Response from Victim's Family
Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac personally visited the family of the deceased OFW, who left behind a 10-year-old son. Cacdac assured the young boy that his mother would forever live in his heart and would want nothing more than for him to complete his studies.
In a poignant moment that captured the tragedy's emotional impact, the 10-year-old son expressed his aspiration to become a firefighter when asked about his future dreams. "Firefighter po para wala na pong mamatay sa sunog," the boy told Secretary Cacdac, demonstrating remarkable compassion despite his personal loss.
Hong Kong officials have reported that 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with the fire, including two directors from Will Power Architects Company, the consultancy firm managing the renovation project at Wang Fuk Court.
The Philippine government continues to monitor the situation and provide support to affected Filipino workers and their families as investigation into the cause of the fire proceeds.
