OFW Maryan Esteban's Remains Return Home After Hong Kong Fire Tragedy
Remains of OFW in Hong Kong Fire Return to Philippines

The remains of the only overseas Filipino worker who perished in a massive Hong Kong fire have finally been repatriated to the Philippines, weeks after the tragic incident.

A Solemn Homecoming

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa) confirmed that the body of domestic worker Maryan Esteban arrived in Manila on the night of Saturday, December 20, 2025. Her remains were met by waiting family members and representatives from various government agencies upon arrival.

In a statement posted on social media, Owwa expressed its condolences and solidarity with Esteban's loved ones. The agency emphasized that the family is not alone in their grief, assuring them of the support of both Owwa and the entire Filipino nation during this period of profound loss.

Recalling the Deadly Blaze

The fatal event occurred in November 2025, when a devastating fire swept through Tai Po in Hong Kong. Authorities described the blaze as one of the territory's deadliest in decades. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) later reported that Maryan Esteban was the lone Filipino casualty resulting from the catastrophic incident.

Government's Continued Support

Owwa has reiterated its commitment to assisting Esteban's family through this difficult time. The agency's role highlights the ongoing institutional support system for the families of overseas Filipino workers facing crises abroad. The repatriation of Esteban's remains marks a crucial, though sorrowful, step toward closure for her family, allowing them to hold memorial services in their homeland.

This event underscores the vulnerabilities faced by OFWs and the critical importance of welfare mechanisms for those working far from home.
