LTO-NIR Investigates Overloaded Modern Jeepney in Bacolod City

The Land Transportation Office–Negros Island Region (LTO-NIR) has initiated a formal investigation into a modernized jeepney operating on the Alijis route in Bacolod City. This action follows reports of the vehicle becoming overcrowded and overloaded on Wednesday, January 18, 2026, raising serious concerns about public safety.

Video Evidence Prompts Mayor's Intervention

The investigation was prompted after a video circulating online captured the modernized jeepney in an overcrowded and overloaded condition. Mayor Greg Gasataya of Bacolod City brought this footage to the attention of authorities, highlighting the significant and unacceptable risk it posed to commuters. In a statement, Gasataya emphasized that public safety is non-negotiable and that any public utility vehicle (PUV) endangering lives will face strict legal consequences.

Collaborative Efforts for Accountability

Mayor Gasataya confirmed that he has discussed the matter with LTO-NIR Regional Director Jeck Conlu, who verified the ongoing investigation. As part of the response, the LTO is set to issue a show cause order to the operator on January 29, with appropriate sanctions to be imposed in line with existing laws and regulations. Additionally, the Bacolod City Government, through Bacolod Traffic and Transportation Management Department (BTTMD) Head Atty. Reuben Sabig, has coordinated with the LTO to ensure the operator is held accountable and to prevent future unsafe practices.

Commitment to Enforcing Transport Regulations

In his remarks, Gasataya reassured the public of the city's dedication to strictly enforcing traffic and transport regulations. This incident underscores the importance of maintaining safety standards for all Bacolodnon commuters, with authorities vowing to take decisive action against any violations. The collaborative approach between local government and transportation agencies aims to uphold welfare and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
