Navy rescues 30 from distressed boat in Tawi-Tawi

In a swift nighttime operation, Philippine Navy sailors successfully rescued thirty individuals from a distressed wooden-hulled boat in the waters off Tawi-Tawi, preventing a potential maritime tragedy.

Nighttime Distress Call Answered

The rescue mission was launched after personnel from the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) spotted a flashing light during a routine patrol. The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, January 16, 2026, approximately 46 nautical miles east of the Turtle Islands municipality.

According to WMNC Commander Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo Reyes Jr., the patrol vessel BRP Juan Magluyan (PC392) identified the signal about five nautical miles from its position. The source was the motor launch M/L Nurdia, which was found dead in the water due to a broken rudder.

Challenging Conditions and Swift Action

Despite facing difficult sea conditions, the crew of PC392 immediately initiated a rescue and assistance operation. They managed to safely bring all 30 passengers aboard the naval vessel. The group of rescued individuals comprised:

  • 16 male passengers
  • 9 female passengers
  • 5 children

Notably, among those saved were one pregnant passenger and two senior citizens, highlighting the vulnerability of those on board.

Safe Disembarkation and Ongoing Support

The successful transfer was completed by 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 17. All passengers were safely disembarked at the port of Turtle Islands and formally turned over to the care of the local municipal government.

Immediate humanitarian assistance was provided on the ground through a coordinated effort. The Turtle Islands Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, alongside the Coast Guard Station (CGS)-Taganak, ensured the survivors received essential support including food, water, and medical attention.

Rear Admiral Reyes emphasized that this operation underscores the vigilance and readiness of the Philippine Navy to respond to emergencies, even in remote and high-risk maritime areas. The timely response averted a crisis and ensured the safety of all passengers aboard the disabled vessel.
