BARMM Clears Final Hurdle, Sets Path for First Parliamentary Elections
Bangsamoro Passes Redistricting Law for 2026 Elections

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has officially cleared the last major obstacle on its historic journey toward electing its first parliamentary government. This milestone follows the successful passage of the Bangsamoro Redistricting Law by the region's Transition Authority Parliament.

A Final Hurdle Cleared for Democratic Milestone

On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Member of Parliament (MP) Rasol Mitmug Jr. confirmed that the region is now firmly on track for its inaugural parliamentary elections. The decisive moment came on the evening of Monday, January 12, 2026, when the Parliament approved Parliament Bill 415, the Bangsamoro Redistricting Law.

Mitmug, who voted in favor of the bill, emphasized that establishing clear legislative districts was the final critical step needed to ensure the landmark elections proceed as scheduled. He acknowledged the intense scrutiny the legislation faced but defended its passage as a pragmatic necessity for the peace process and long-term stability in Muslim Mindanao.

Ensuring Inclusive Representation for All Provinces

As the secretary general of the Bangsamoro People's Party (BPP), Mitmug was a vocal advocate for geographical inclusivity during the law's deliberations. He specifically championed the interests of the island provinces, working diligently to ensure that Basilan and Sulu received fair representation and were not marginalized in the new seat allocations.

"I believe this is the only way to ensure our first parliamentary elections proceed," Mitmug stated. "While this law is not perfect, it is the most appropriate step we have right now to give our people a voice."

He expressed confidence that the redistricting will result in more equitable representation, allowing the diverse ethnic and linguistic groups across the Bangsamoro archipelago to participate directly in their own governance.

Transitioning to a Mature Parliamentary Democracy

The enactment of the Redistricting Law marks a pivotal shift from the transitional governing phase to a fully functioning parliamentary democracy as envisioned in the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB). This foundational law enables several key democratic principles:

  • Accountability: Elected representatives will now be directly accountable to specific geographic constituencies.
  • Fair Resource Allocation: Development funds and legislative focus can be distributed more justly across all areas of the region.
  • Political Maturity: The region moves decisively toward the regular parliamentary system promised in the peace agreement.

With this legal framework now in place, the Bangsamoro region stands at the threshold of a historic electoral exercise. The upcoming elections will define the political landscape and future of self-governance for the people of the Bangsamoro for generations to come.
