Former Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes has publicly addressed the recent circulation of a document concerning his disqualification, strongly clarifying that it does not represent a final and executory decision. Cortes labeled the spread of the document as a deliberate attempt to mislead the residents of Mandaue.
Not a Final Ruling, Says Former Mayor
In a Facebook post directed at Mandauehanons, Cortes explained that the widely shared document is not a final decision barring him from holding public office. Instead, he stated it is merely a ruling from one division of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) regarding a case for the cancellation of his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) that was filed last year.
He further pointed out that the issue has already become "moot and academic" concerning the May 2025 elections, which have concluded. The former mayor expressed deep concern over what he called an intentional effort to deceive the public by selectively sharing and even editing parts of the released documents without providing the proper legal context.
Allegations of Deliberate Misinformation
Cortes questioned why such actions persist despite claims from some quarters that the election is over and decided. He revealed that he chose to remain silent after the election out of respect for due process and the country's democratic institutions.
However, he made it clear that his silence should not be mistaken as an acceptance of false accusations. "I remain calm, determined, and confident in the law," Cortes declared. He added that he believes the truth will prevail through the proper legal process rather than through misinformation.
Commitment to Service and Call for Vigilance
The former mayor reiterated his unwavering commitment to serving Mandaue City. He urged residents to stay vigilant and discerning, while also calling on the public to reject any and all efforts to deceive and mislead the community.
Cortes's statement underscores a ongoing legal battle and positions the circulated disqualification order as a preliminary step that he fully intends to appeal through the appropriate legal channels.
