Philippine Army Commander Advocates for Peace and Unity at MNLF Anniversary Celebration
Brigadier General Emmanuel Cabasan, commander of the 1103rd Infantry Brigade, delivered a powerful message of unity and peaceful coexistence during the 58th founding anniversary celebration of the Moro National Liberation Front and Grand Iftar on Wednesday, March 18. The event took place in Sitio Mabuhot, Pasil village, Indanan, Sulu, and was attended by military officials, MNLF leaders, and local government representatives.
Emphasis on Dialogue Over Arms
In his address, Cabasan urged all sectors to move forward together in pursuit of societal common good, explicitly rejecting the use of armaments. "We no longer need to carry weapons like in the past. Instead, let us practice understanding, dialogue, and unity for peace," he stated, underscoring a shift from past conflicts toward collaborative peacebuilding.
He further highlighted the critical importance of sustained dialogue and adherence to peace agreements, praising the MNLF's role in fostering long-term stability in Mindanao. "Continued dialogue and the peace process are important. By uniting, especially the MNLF, we can maintain peace towards development, not only in Sulu but throughout the country," Cabasan added, reinforcing the broader national impact of local peace initiatives.
Local Leadership Echoes Call for Cooperation
Indanan Mayor Al Bakil Jikiri welcomed participants and expressed gratitude for the Philippine Army's presence, framing it as a symbol of progress from years of conflict. "This celebration is proof that we have come a long way from years of conflict. The presence of our soldiers symbolizes a new era of understanding, cooperation, and peace in our country," Jikiri remarked.
He also emphasized the MNLF's continuing role in promoting peace and development in Sulu, calling on all stakeholders to remain committed to collaboration and mutual respect. This sentiment was shared by attendees, including Cabasan's staff and battalion commanders, who joined MNLF leaders in a spirit of solidarity during the Iftar meal.
Symbolism and Commitment to Nation-Building
The gathering served as a poignant symbol of the ongoing commitment between the Philippine Army and the MNLF toward reconciliation, mutual respect, and nation-building. It reflected a shared aspiration among all stakeholders to strengthen peace and development efforts across Mindanao.
The participation of the 1103rd Infantry Brigade in this historic event reaffirms the Philippine Army's dedication to inclusive peace initiatives and its support for programs that foster harmony, understanding, and progress among diverse communities. This event marks a significant step in bridging historical divides and building a more unified future for the region.
