Marcos Hosts Diplomatic Corps, Vows Stronger Ties & UNSC Bid for 2027
Marcos Hosts Vin d'honneur, Eyes Stronger Global Ties

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to strengthening international partnerships during the traditional Vin d'honneur reception at Malacañan Palace in Manila on Friday, January 16, 2026.

A Toast to Renewed Partnerships and Hope

The event, a key diplomatic tradition held for New Year's Day and Independence Day, saw President Marcos sharing a toast with members of the diplomatic corps led by Papal Nuncio and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Archbishop Charles John Brown. Marcos expressed a "renewed sense of hope, optimism, and vitality" for the country as it welcomed 2026.

Addressing the assembled diplomats, government officials, and guests, the President extended the Filipino people's gratitude and warmest greetings to the nations they represent. He emphasized that the gathering was a valuable opportunity to reaffirm shared commitments and renew a collective sense of purpose for the work ahead.

Charting a Proactive Foreign Policy Path

President Marcos expressed confidence in the strength of the country's bilateral relationships and its shared dedication with the global community to a rules-based international order. He underscored that this foundation is crucial for achieving lasting peace and sustainable, inclusive development.

Reflecting on the past three and a half years since assuming office in 2022, Marcos stated the Philippines has engaged the world with renewed purpose. The goal has been to promote peace, strengthen cooperation, and firmly uphold an international order based on law. Despite global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, the nation has forged "meaningful, concrete, and mutually beneficial" partnerships with foreign allies.

"True to our commitment as an innovative pathfinder, a trusted peacemaker, and a reliable partner, we pursue a proactive diplomatic agenda," Marcos declared. He noted the expansion of cooperation with both longstanding and new partners, particularly in key economic and security sectors.

ASEAN Leadership and UN Security Council Ambition

Looking ahead, Marcos highlighted two major platforms for Philippine foreign policy in the coming years. First, as the 2026 chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Philippines vows to enhance dialogue on regional security and economic integration. The aim is to improve lives and strengthen resilience for citizens across ASEAN and with global partners.

Second, the President formally highlighted the country's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term. He presented the Philippines' unique perspective as a developing maritime nation, a contributor to UN peacekeeping, and a firm advocate of international law.

"If entrusted with this responsibility, the Philippines will be principled and constructive —a voice that will champion the rule of law, protect civilians, promote conflict prevention, and amplify the perspectives of small and middle powers," Marcos assured the diplomatic community.

International Praise and Mutual Best Wishes

In response, Papal Nuncio Charles John Brown commended President Marcos for his efforts in fighting corruption and resolving irregularities in government projects. He also expressed optimism for the Philippines' ASEAN chairship, believing it will boost regional competitiveness and unlock new opportunities for inclusive growth.

"The Diplomatic Corps wishes the Philippines all the best in this noble endeavor," Brown stated. On behalf of the corps, he extended sincere wishes for a new year blessed by peace, progress, and prosperity.

President Marcos concluded by assuring the international community of the Philippines' steadfast commitment to multilateralism, international peace, human rights, and the rule of law as the nation steps into a pivotal year on the global stage.
