Sulu Residents Voluntarily Surrender Five Firearms in Peace Initiative Success

In a significant development for peace and security efforts, residents across separate villages in Sulu have voluntarily handed over five firearms, marking a positive outcome from sustained community engagement initiatives. This action reflects the growing trust and cooperation between local communities, government units, and security forces, as efforts to foster a safer environment continue to gain momentum.

Facilitated Through Localized Peace Engagement

The handover was facilitated through the ongoing Localized Peace Engagement (LPE) initiatives led by the 1102nd Infantry Brigade's 21st Infantry Battalion, in close coordination with local stakeholders. Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Borras, commander of the 21IB, emphasized that the increasing number of voluntary surrenders highlights the effectiveness of these sustained community engagement efforts. "This demonstrates how dialogue and collaboration can lead to tangible results in peacebuilding," Borras noted.

Military Leadership Reaffirms Commitment

Brigadier General Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade, reaffirmed the brigade's commitment to sustaining peace and security within its area of responsibility. "We are dedicated to building on this progress through continuous engagement and support for local initiatives," Delos Santos stated.

Meanwhile, Major General Leonardo Peña of the 11th Infantry Division underscored the importance of a whole-of-nation approach in achieving lasting peace. Peña explained that the continued voluntary handover of firearms signals a strong community commitment to peace, as more residents choose dialogue over conflict. "This brings Sulu closer to a future anchored on stability, security, and shared progress," he added.

Implications for Future Peace Efforts

The successful handover not only reduces the number of illicit weapons in circulation but also strengthens the foundation for ongoing peace dialogues. As these initiatives yield positive results, they pave the way for enhanced cooperation and a more secure environment for all residents in Sulu.
