Several lawyers have filed a supplemental petition before the Supreme Court regarding the House of Representatives Justice Committee's impeachment proceedings against the Vice President. In an online post, Atty. Israelito Torreon shared that they filed the petition with the High Court along with other petitioners including Atty. Vic Rodriguez and Atty. Jimmy Bondoc.
Supplemental Petition for Certiorari
The Supplemental Petition for Certiorari was filed on the belief that the implementation of House Resolution No. 892 is unconstitutional. Through this resolution, the congressional committee was authorized to conduct hearings on impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte.
The petitioners argued that the House Committee on Justice committed grave abuse of discretion by proceeding with the hearings even though Congress was in recess. Therefore, they are asking the Supreme Court to declare House Resolution No. 892 as unconstitutional and void.
Key Demands
- Declare House Resolution No. 892 unconstitutional and void
- Invalidate all hearings, subpoenas, motions, and other actions taken by the committee under the resolution
- Issue a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) to immediately stop further hearings
The group clarified that their goal is not to protect the Vice President from accountability but to ensure that the process is in accordance with the law.
