The City Government of Davao marked a significant milestone as the Co Su Gian Home for the Aged celebrated its 32nd anniversary on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. This facility has served as a loving sanctuary for Davao's elderly community for over three decades.
A Legacy of Compassionate Care
Located in Lower Cabantian, Buhangin, the home has become a second family for senior citizens in Davao City. The anniversary celebration brought together the Davao City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the Co Su Gian community, and various partners who have supported the facility through the years.
During the program, residents demonstrated their various talents, showcasing the vibrant community within the home. The event also served as an opportunity to recognize the numerous supporters who have contributed to the facility's success over its 32-year history.
Sustaining Dignity and Service
Nenita S. Lim, the center manager of Co Su Gian, delivered an emotional speech highlighting the institution's journey. "Today we gather with grateful hearts as we celebrate the 32nd founding anniversary of Co Su Gian home for the aged," she stated, emphasizing that this milestone reflects not just longevity but the compassion and unwavering commitment that have sustained the facility.
Lim credited the City Government of Davao's strong foundation for enabling them to serve residents while supporting their dignity and well-being. She specifically acknowledged the continuous support of the CSWDO and gave special recognition to friends and donors who have stood the test of time.
The center manager also made special mention of the dedicated staff, house parents, center nurses, social workers, and multi-disciplinary team whose hands have brought comfort and assurance to residents. She expressed gratitude in both English and Filipino, saying "Salamat sa inyong pasensya and heartfelt service, compassion and unwavering dedication for creating the environment where our nanays and tatays feel valued and cared for."
Future Plans and Current Services
In a separate interview, Lim revealed plans to strengthen quality services for residents, particularly through activities designed to delay dementia progression. "We will intensify therapeutic activities," she explained. "Since there are other elders who are still able, they are the target for receiving occupational therapeutic services so they do not feel bored."
These activities aim to improve both physical condition and mental health, potentially slowing the progression of dementia. Current outdoor activities for residents include movie viewing and visits to coastal roads and parks.
The center currently provides comprehensive services including:
- Temporary shelter for indigent and abandoned senior citizens
- Psychosocial support and health services
- Various assisted activities organized by staff and houseparents
- Travel fare assistance for residents seeking to return home
- Help with registration and claiming annual financial assistance
The facility currently houses 54 clients, with 13 residents being bedridden. While most residents come from Davao City, some from outside the city have been assessed as neglected or abandoned and are temporarily staying at the center while being referred to national agencies.
