Eight years have passed since a devastating fire engulfed the NCCC Mall in Maa, Davao City, on December 23, 2017, claiming 38 lives. To this day, the City Government of Davao remains steadfast in honoring the memory of those lost and supporting their grieving families through annual commemorations and tangible aid.
Unwavering Annual Support for the Families
According to Acting Administrative Officer Marie M. Botona of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the city's commitment has never wavered since the tragedy first occurred. For the year 2025, each of the 38 affected families received a P3,000 gift check alongside food packs containing rice and canned goods.
"It is held every year. So far, since it started in 2017, there has never been a moment that it was forgotten. Every year, the City Government of Davao provides support to them," Botona stated, emphasizing the program's consistency.
A Commemoration of Remembrance and Gratitude
The support extends beyond material assistance. The CSWDO organizes a solemn commemoration that begins with a mass attended by all beneficiaries, followed by the distribution of the aid packages. This gesture provides a space for collective mourning and solidarity.
Beneficiaries have expressed profound gratitude for the city's enduring presence in their lives. Riolinda Obo shared, "We are thankful that they never forget us. Every year, there is always something prepared for us, and it is also their way of remembering those we lost, our loved ones."
Another beneficiary, Maricar Santella, highlighted the emotional significance of the annual event. She noted that it serves as a reassurance from the city that their loved ones are remembered and valued, complementing the financial and food assistance.
Ongoing Monitoring and Comprehensive Care
The city's support system is designed for the long term. Beyond the yearly commemoration, the CSWDO continues to monitor the families through social workers assigned to their respective districts. These professionals ensure the families can access other established government programs and services whenever needed.
This holistic approach underscores Davao City's pledge to stand with the families, helping to alleviate the enduring heartache. As Santella added, "We are so thankful to the city government for their full support and for never abandoning us. They truly strive to give us the best."
