Minors Caught After Being Trapped in Dalaguete Store Robbery

Two suspected thieves, including a minor, found themselves in a tight spot after being trapped inside the very store they had just robbed in Dalaguete, Cebu. The incident led to their swift arrest in the early hours of Friday, December 5, 2025.

Early Morning Break-In Leads to Capture

The drama unfolded in Barangay Tapon, Dalaguete, at approximately 3:45 AM. According to Police Major Vincent Zozobrado, chief of the Dalaguete Police Station, the suspects were caught red-handed. The complainant, Barangay Councilor Ricardo Normalito Borja, 63, was awakened by suspicious noises coming from his sari-sari store.

Upon investigation, the councilor discovered that thieves had broken into his establishment. He immediately alerted the authorities, leading to a rapid police response. The officers arrived to find the perpetrators still inside the premises, unable to escape.

Suspects and Stolen Items Recovered

The police identified the suspects as an 18-year-old male, alias John, and his 13-year-old accomplice, both residents of the area. Authorities recovered a backpack from the duo, which contained a significant amount of stolen money.

The stolen cash, a mix of coins and paper bills, was valued at over P2,000. The quick thinking of the victim and the prompt police action were credited for the successful apprehension before the suspects could flee.

Legal Consequences and DSWD Custody

The two suspects faced different paths following their arrest. The 18-year-old, alias John, is facing formal charges for burglary and was subsequently detained at the police station.

In accordance with Philippine law regarding juvenile offenders, the 13-year-old minor was not jailed but was instead turned over to the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). This procedure ensures the minor receives proper intervention and care under the legal system.

Major Zozobrado emphasized the importance of community vigilance, noting that the councilor's alertness directly led to the resolution of the case. The Dalaguete Police Station continues to remind business owners to enhance their security measures, especially during late hours.
