Mandaue Police Deploy 1,700+ Personnel for 2026 Traslacion Security
Over 1,700 Police Secure Mandaue's Traslacion 2026

The Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) is mobilizing a massive security force of more than 1,700 personnel to ensure the safety of the annual Traslacion and the reception of the holy image of Saint Joseph this January 2026.

Enhanced Security for Expanded Religious Events

Police Colonel Cirilo B. Acosta Jr., the city police director, announced the heightened security measures on Monday, January 12. The significant increase from the over 800 officers deployed in 2025 is a direct response to the expanded schedule of religious activities.

This year's celebration will feature overnight events, including masses and the traditional pahalok (veneration), which are expected to draw larger crowds of devotees. Last year's activities were confined to the afternoon.

"Because there are additional side events, we identified more areas where we need to deploy personnel," Acosta explained. The plan received approval from Police Brigadier General Anthony Aberin, the regional director of the Police Regional Office-7 (PRO-7).

Detailed Deployment and Operational Timeline

Police personnel will begin their deployment as early as 8 a.m. on the day of the event. A comprehensive briefing will be held two hours prior to ensure coordination and readiness. By 4 p.m., all officers are expected to be at their designated posts.

Security coverage will remain in effect until at least 10 p.m., potentially extending to midnight, depending on the conclusion of the mass at the Basilica. Police will stay on standby for the reception of the holy image in Mandaue City.

Acosta emphasized that this special deployment is over and above regular police operations and will not impact routine patrols or fixed visibility points. Personnel will operate on a 24/7 basis, with augmentation from the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) and other support units.

Coastal Monitoring and Threat Assessment

A key focus of the security operation will be the fluvial procession and coastal areas. Approximately 100 additional officers have been assigned to monitor locations such as Looc, Subangdaku, Paknaan, and the Mandaue Bay area, where large gatherings of spectators are anticipated.

Regarding potential threats, Acosta provided reassurance based on current intelligence. "So far, as of today, we have not seen or received any threats based on the evaluation of our intelligence agencies and intelligence units. Everything is good so far," he stated.

However, he stressed that the police force will not lower its guard. "Even without any threats, we do not let our guard down. We remain fully alert to ensure that the celebration is peaceful, meaningful, and that the religious nature of the activities is maintained," Acosta affirmed.

All personnel have reportedly received their specific assignments and are prepared for the major religious event.
