A punong barangay in Iloilo voluntarily surrendered six unlicensed firearms to the San Joaquin Municipal Police Station (MPS) on April 23, 2026, as part of the intensified campaign by the Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO 6) against loose firearms.
Community Cooperation Highlighted
Police Brig. Gen. Josefino Ligan, regional director of PRO 6, praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and the community. “This voluntary surrender highlights the growing trust and cooperation between our communities and the police. We encourage other firearm holders to follow this example and either surrender unlicensed firearms or ensure their proper registration. Our collective efforts are crucial in maintaining peace and order,” Ligan said.
Details of Surrendered Firearms
The surrendered items included five caliber .38 revolvers and one improvised 5.56mm break-type short firearm. All units lacked serial numbers and ammunition. The San Joaquin MPS facilitated the turnover and now holds custody of the firearms for documentation and proper disposition.
Campaign Against Loose Firearms
The voluntary surrender is part of PRO 6’s intensified drive to reduce the number of loose firearms in the region, aiming to prevent crimes and ensure safer communities. Police officials reiterated that the success of the campaign relies heavily on public cooperation. They noted that voluntary surrender initiatives strengthen trust between law enforcement and the public.
Call for Continued Cooperation
PRO 6 continues to urge individuals possessing unlicensed firearms to coordinate with the nearest police station for documentation or surrender. The regional office remains committed to maintaining peace and order through community engagement and strict law enforcement.
