In a significant development for public safety, Central Visayas has recorded a nearly 30% decline in overall crime cases, according to comparative police data spanning from August 2024 to February 2026. The region's crime rate dropped from 1,472 cases in the previous year to 1,031 cases in the current period, marking a substantial improvement in law enforcement efforts.
Sharp Declines in Major Crime Categories
The most dramatic reduction was observed in motor theft, which plummeted by an impressive 60%, followed closely by rape cases that decreased by 46%. Additionally, incidents of robbery and murder both fell by over 40%, while theft and physical injuries also registered notable declines. These figures highlight a broad-based trend toward reduced criminal activity across multiple offense types.
Homicide Cases Show Concerning Increase
Despite the overall positive news, the Police Regional Office 7 (PRO-7) reported a 10% rise in homicide cases, presenting a contrasting challenge. In response, Regional Director Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan has directed his personnel to intensify law enforcement measures in affected areas, emphasizing the need for targeted strategies to address this uptick.
Factors Behind the Crime Reduction
PRO-7 attributes the overall decrease in crime to the implementation of the 5-Focused Agenda, a program spearheaded by PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. Key elements of this initiative include increased police visibility on the streets and active collaboration with citizens in crime prevention efforts. This community-oriented approach has played a crucial role in fostering a safer environment.
The data underscores a mixed but largely encouraging picture for Central Visayas, with significant progress in reducing most crimes offset by a need for focused attention on homicide prevention. Continued vigilance and public cooperation will be essential to sustain these gains and address remaining challenges.
