Comelec Dismisses 'No Election' Claim for 2028 Polls
Comelec Denies 2028 No-Election Scenario

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has firmly denied any possibility of a "no election" scenario in 2028, as alleged by Senator Imee Marcos. In a phone interview on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Comelec Chairman George Garcia stated unequivocally that the May 2028 national and local polls will proceed as scheduled.

Preparations Underway

Garcia emphasized that the Comelec is already deep in preparations for the elections, despite being two years away. "No-El 2028 will not happen," he declared, pointing to the ongoing groundwork as proof of the commission's commitment.

Constitutional Guarantee

The poll chief further stressed that holding elections in 2028 is mandated by the 1987 Constitution. "It's a mandate of the Constitution to have an election in that year," Garcia said, reinforcing the legal basis for the upcoming polls.

Senator's Allegations

Earlier, Senator Imee Marcos presented a video in the Senate alleging that minority senators were planning to push for amendments to the 1987 Constitution to extend the term of her brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. According to Senator Marcos, such amendments could lead to a "no election" scenario in 2028.

Minority senators quickly denied these allegations, labeling them as "propaganda" and "fake news." The Comelec's firm stance further undermines the claims, ensuring the public that the 2028 elections will proceed as constitutionally mandated.
