The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding fraudulent text messages and online posts that demand a fee in exchange for the release of cash relief assistance (CRA). This alert comes after the DSWD distributed PHP5,000 in aid to more than 1,100 tricycle drivers in Tabuk City, Kalinga, on April 8, 2026.
Scam Alert and Public Vigilance
On Friday, April 10, 2026, the DSWD emphasized that these messages, which ask for PHP1,000 to access the PHP5,000 CRA, are part of a scam targeting beneficiaries under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program. Reports from DSWD Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) highlighted attempts by individuals to deceive recipients by falsely claiming that a payment is necessary to obtain the financial aid.
Official Statement from DSWD Spokesperson
In a statement, DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao reiterated that the department never charges any amount for the release of financial assistance. "We are sternly reminding the public that the DSWD does not ask for any amount in exchange for the release of financial assistance. This scheme is clearly a fraud and not part of any program of the department," Dumlao said. She urged beneficiaries and the general public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities immediately to the nearest DSWD office or authorities.
Coordination and Protection Measures
With cash aid payouts ongoing for regional public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers, the DSWD is actively coordinating with concerned authorities to address these fraudulent activities and ensure the protection of its beneficiaries. Dumlao emphasized that only official communications from DSWD field offices and authorized partners should be trusted as legitimate sources of information regarding its programs and services.
The DSWD's warning serves as a crucial reminder for the public to exercise caution and verify information through proper channels to avoid falling victim to such scams.
