Senator Gatchalian Advocates for Middle-Class Support During Oil Crisis

In a recent interview with Bombo Radyo, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian emphasized the urgent need to extend government assistance to middle-class Filipinos amidst the ongoing oil crisis. He argued that while vulnerable sectors often receive aid, middle-class workers, who are significantly impacted by the crisis, should not be overlooked.

Proposal for Pension Contribution Relief

Under Gatchalian's proposal, the government would temporarily cover the pension contributions of middle-class workers. This includes payments to the Government Service Insurance System for public employees and the Social Security System for private sector workers. The senator highlighted that up to 70% of the middle class consists of workers, meaning this initiative could benefit a substantial number of individuals if implemented by the national government.

Feasibility and Historical Precedent

Gatchalian expressed confidence in the government's ability to execute this plan, citing a similar suspension of premium payments during the pandemic as a precedent. He noted that with adequate funding, such measures are achievable again. According to Senate estimates, the government might shoulder approximately P9 billion monthly under this proposal.

Financial Considerations and Long-Term Impact

The senator assured that financing this aid for several months would not be problematic, as the national government has access to up to P238 billion earmarked for crisis and calamity assistance. This move aims to alleviate financial burdens on middle-class families struggling with rising costs due to the oil crisis.
