Ongoing Investigation into Murder of Community Radio Anchor in Negros Occidental
The La Castellana Municipal Police Station continues its intensive investigation into the tragic killing of a community radio announcer that occurred on March 20, 2026, in La Castellana, Negros Occidental. Authorities are working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding this violent incident.
Victim Identified as Local Radio Personality
Police have identified the victim as Julito “Jaz” Diamante Calo, a 49-year-old resident of Sitio Lapak Kawayanan, Barangay Robles in La Castellana. Calo served as an anchor for the “Waswasanay sa Quinto Distrito” program on DNN News FM, a station based in Himamaylan City. In addition to his media work, he was employed as a job order employee by the local government of Himamaylan City.
Details of the Fatal Shooting
According to Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, chief of the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) Public Information Office, the incident took place around 2:30 p.m. Calo was standing in front of his house, located beside the road, when a white Sports Utility Vehicle approached from the direction of La Carlota City and stopped near him.
An unidentified suspect inside the vehicle suddenly fired a shot, striking Calo in the head. He died instantly at the scene. The suspect then fled the area, heading toward the town proper of La Castellana.
Investigation Challenges and Current Status
Malong emphasized that the investigation remains active, with efforts focused on identifying the suspect and determining the motive behind the killing. As of now, police have not established any clear leads regarding why Calo was targeted.
The case has drawn attention to the risks faced by community journalists in the region. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in the probe.
