Central Luzon Police Seize P150M in Illegal Cigarettes, Arrest 14 in Baliwag Raid
P150M Illegal Cigarettes Seized, 14 Arrested in Central Luzon

In a significant blow to the illicit tobacco trade, the Police Regional Office 3 (PRO3) has intensified its crackdown on illegal cigarettes across Central Luzon, with a recent major operation resulting in the seizure of contraband valued at approximately P150 million.

Massive Confiscation in Baliwag City

Last week, the PRO3 Regional Special Operations Group (RSOG3) executed a targeted raid in Baliwag City, Bulacan, leading to the arrest of 14 individuals involved in the illegal cigarette trade. The operation was launched based on credible intelligence reports indicating the unauthorized transfer of illicit cigarettes along the DRT highway in Barangay Tarcan.

During the raid, authorities confiscated around 2,000 boxes of cigarettes, predominantly bearing the brands Modern and RGD, all lacking the mandatory Bureau of Internal Revenue tax stamps. Additionally, six vehicles utilized for transporting the illegal goods were impounded by operatives.

Ongoing Efforts Against Illicit Trade

This latest seizure is part of a broader, sustained campaign by PRO3 to combat the proliferation of illegal cigarettes in the region. Just days prior, PRO3 operatives confiscated an additional P4.9 million worth of untaxed cigarettes, underscoring the persistent nature of this illicit activity.

Recall that earlier operations uncovered billions of pesos worth of illegal cigarettes at an establishment in Mexico, Pampanga, where cigarette manufacturing machinery was also seized. Since that raid, a continuous stream of illegal cigarette discoveries has been reported across Central Luzon, raising critical questions about the financiers and protectors behind these operations.

Leadership and Promotions Within PRO3

Amid these enforcement efforts, PRO3 has seen notable promotions within its ranks. Lieutenant Colonel Dexter Versola, who was appointed as chief of the Regional Public Information Office under the leadership of former PRO3 director Brigadier General Ponce Rogelio Penones, continues to hold his position effectively. Recently, Versola was promoted to the rank of full-fledged Colonel, a testament to his dedication and service.

Similarly, Lieutenant Colonel Jaqueline Paupo has also been promoted to Colonel, highlighting the recognition of exemplary performance within the police force.

Concerns Over Unreported Incidents

However, challenges persist. According to intelligence sources, numerous unreported incidents are occurring within the region, particularly at Police Station 4 in Angeles City. There is a growing call for the Angeles City police director to investigate the activities and oversight at this station to ensure transparency and accountability in law enforcement operations.

As PRO3 ramps up its efforts, the focus remains on dismantling the networks fueling the illegal cigarette trade, while also addressing internal governance to maintain public trust and safety in Central Luzon.
