Major Smuggling Bust in Lanao del Norte Nets P3.2 Million in Contraband Cigarettes
In a significant enforcement action, police officers in Lanao del Norte have successfully intercepted and seized smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P3.2 million. The operation culminated in an intense vehicle chase early Thursday morning, March 26, 2026, underscoring the authorities' commitment to curbing illicit trade within the province.
Details of the Interception and Pursuit
According to Police Colonel Leo de Leon Sua, the provincial police director, the incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. in Purok 6, Pandanan village, located within the municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo. Personnel from the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) were conducting a routine checkpoint operation when they noticed a truck with a visibly broken windshield.
Under Republic Act 4136, also known as the Land Transportation and Traffic Code of the Philippines, operating a vehicle with a broken windshield constitutes an impoundable violation. The officers promptly flagged down the truck for inspection.
However, the driver chose to evade authorities, accelerating through the checkpoint instead of complying with the officers' instructions. This brazen act triggered an immediate hot pursuit operation by the alerted policemen.
Discovery of Abandoned Vehicle and Contraband
The pursuing law enforcement team eventually located the truck abandoned off the roadside in the same area of Purok 6. Upon a thorough inspection of the vehicle, officers made a startling discovery: the truck was loaded with 80 master cases of cigarettes.
Based on valuation standards set by the Bureau of Customs (BOC), each case is estimated to be worth P40,000. This brings the total estimated market value of the confiscated contraband to a substantial P3.2 million.
The confiscated cigarettes and the vehicle used in the smuggling attempt are currently under the custody of the 2nd PMFC. Authorities are preparing for the formal turnover of these items to the Bureau of Customs for further processing and investigation.
Ongoing Investigation and Future Measures
Police Colonel Sua confirmed that an investigation is actively underway to determine the ownership of the smuggled cigarettes and to identify all individuals involved in this illegal operation.
He emphasized the provincial police force's dedication to intensifying checkpoint operations and enhancing inter-agency collaboration. These efforts are crucial to preventing the entry and distribution of smuggled goods in Lanao del Norte.
Sua also issued a call to the public, encouraging community vigilance. He urged residents to report any suspicious activities in their localities to the authorities promptly, highlighting the essential role citizens play in supporting law enforcement initiatives.
This successful operation serves as a clear warning to smugglers and demonstrates the proactive stance of Lanao del Norte's law enforcement agencies in safeguarding the province's economic and legal integrity.
