P5.6M Smuggled Cigarettes Seized in Carcar City Night Operation

In a significant enforcement action, authorities successfully intercepted a massive shipment of smuggled cigarettes valued at an estimated P5.6 million during a Monday night operation in Carcar City. The bust occurred at precisely 7:30 p.m. on January 26, 2026, in Sitio Kapatagan, Barangay Perrelos, marking a critical blow against illicit trade activities in the region.

The Midnight Interception and Seizure Details

Police officers halted a Nissan Terrano vehicle that was transporting 70 small crates filled with illegal cigarettes. Upon inspection, each crate contained 25 reams of cigarettes, totaling a substantial quantity of contraband goods. Investigators quickly confirmed that the shipment was being moved illegally, as it lacked the necessary permits and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) certifications required for the lawful sale or transportation of tobacco products within the Philippines.

Arrest and Collaborative Efforts

During the operation, a 43-year-old businessman, identified by the alias "Pauti," was apprehended at the scene. He is currently detained by the Regional Special Project Unit (RSPU) 7, pending further legal proceedings. This successful bust was the result of a coordinated team effort involving multiple agencies, including:

  • Carcar City and Cebu City Police units
  • Regional Intelligence and Special Project Units
  • The 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company
  • The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR)

Crackdown on Smuggling and Official Statements

Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) Director Col. Abubakar Mangelen Jr. attributed the seizure to what he described as "modern policing" and robust cooperation among various government agencies. In a statement, Mangelen emphasized, "This accomplishment reflects the kind of modern policing we continue to uphold in Cebu Province—professional, intelligence-driven, and anchored on respect for the rights of our citizens." By preventing the sale of smuggled goods, authorities aim to safeguard local communities and protect government tax revenues from being undermined by illegal activities.

Col. Mangelen further vowed that the police will intensify their campaign against all forms of crime to ensure the safety and security of the province. This operation underscores ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and uphold law and order in Cebu.
