In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, police authorities in South Cotabato have successfully apprehended two individuals and seized smuggled cigarettes valued at over P641,000. The operation, which underscores ongoing efforts to combat smuggling activities, took place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, in Guinsang-an village, Sto. Niño, South Cotabato.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
Police Brigadier General Arnold Ardiente, the director of the Police Regional Office-Soccsksargen, identified the arrested suspects using their aliases. They are Sergio, a 36-year-old resident of Abaga village in Balo-i, Lanao del Norte, and Boy-Boy, a 40-year-old from Poblacion village in Sto. Niño, South Cotabato. The arrests occurred after police operatives, while enforcing local ordinances under the Safer City Project, noticed the two individuals attempting to flee upon seeing authorities.
Discovery of Contraband
According to General Ardiente's report, the police officers conducted an immediate verification and inspection, during which they inadvertently discovered several boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes in plain view inside the suspects' residence. The two suspects were unable to present the necessary documents for the possession and distribution of the tobacco products, leading to their arrest.
The confiscated items included 15 master cases of smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated total market value of P641,760. This seizure highlights the substantial financial impact of smuggling operations in the region.
Post-Operation Procedures
Following the arrest, the suspects and the recovered evidence were transported to the Sto. Niño Municipal Police Station for proper documentation and the filing of appropriate charges. The confiscated cigarettes are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs at the General Santos Port for proper disposition, ensuring that the contraband is handled according to legal protocols.
Commitment to Law Enforcement
General Ardiente commended the operatives for their accomplishment, stating, "This successful operation highlights our strengthened coordination and sustained campaign against smuggling activities." He emphasized that the police remain committed to protecting communities and supporting lawful commerce by intensifying law enforcement operations. This incident is part of broader efforts, including information dissemination and continuous monitoring, to prevent the entry of smuggled goods into the area.
The operation not only disrupts illegal trade but also sends a strong message to potential smugglers about the authorities' vigilance and dedication to upholding the law. As such, it contributes to safer communities and a more regulated market environment in South Cotabato and beyond.
