On Friday, May 1, 2026, progressive groups, labor unions, and various sectors held protest actions on P. del Rosario and Colon Streets in Cebu City to mark the 124th anniversary of Labor Day.
PNP Assessment
The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Friday that no major untoward incidents occurred based on its initial assessment of Labor Day activities nationwide.
Early reports indicated at least nine rallies were held across the country, attended by approximately 3,410 participants. The activities highlighted workers' grievances such as wage increases, oil prices, and worker protection.
“The initial assessment is coming out well because we have no untoward incidents as of this report,” said PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño in a press briefing.
Police Operations
According to Tuaño, police operations focused on visibility, traffic management, security of vital areas, and ensuring orderly public assemblies. Authorities coordinated with rally organizers to respect the right to peaceful protest while ensuring safety.
Tuaño revealed that most rallies in Metro Manila were held without permits, except for one authorized by the local government of Marikina. He defended security measures near Malacañang, including the placement of barbed wire.
“The PNP says there is no such thing as overkill as far as preparation is concerned,” Tuaño said. “We remain on standby — not just to ensure security, but to support the safe and peaceful expression of our people’s concerns,” he added in a statement.
Over 106,000 police personnel were deployed nationwide, along with force multipliers and partner agencies, to ensure public safety.
