PNP Relieves Driver Following Viral Edsa Busway Collision Incident

The Philippine National Police Logistics Support Service has taken decisive action by ordering the relief of a personnel involved in a highly publicized collision on the Edsa busway over the weekend. This move comes after a video of the incident went viral, drawing significant public attention and criticism.

Zero Tolerance Policy Enforced by Police Leadership

Police Brigadier General Noel Vallo, director of the LSS, emphasized during a press conference on Monday, April 20, 2026, that the personnel was at fault in the collision. "We have zero tolerance with regard to erring policemen. There are no sacred cows—if you made a mistake, you should be held accountable," Vallo stated firmly. He added that upon reviewing the video evidence, it was clear the PNP vehicle had swerved improperly, confirming the mistake.

Details of the Collision and Aftermath

The incident occurred on April 17 when a bus struck the rear left side of a PNP-marked coaster after the coaster entered the Edsa carousel busway along Main Avenue in Quezon City. According to Vallo, the PNP vehicle was en route to Commonwealth to pick up passengers for the National Government's free ride program, designed to mitigate the effects of the ongoing oil crisis. He noted that the Department of Transportation had issued a memorandum permitting vehicles participating in the "Libreng Sakay" program to use the Edsa carousel, which is typically restricted to public utility buses.

Following the collision, a video captured by a bus passenger showed the driver of the PNP vehicle exiting his car, approaching the bus driver, and demanding his driver's license. The bus driver refused to comply until traffic enforcers arrived on the scene. This footage quickly spread online, with many netizens accusing the police of bullying the other driver, fueling widespread debate and concern.

Administrative Charges and Public Apology

In response to the incident, Vallo confirmed that administrative charges are being prepared against the relieved personnel. During a separate press conference held by the National Police Commission, Chief Master Sergeant Jenifer Bredico, the driver of the PNP coaster, issued a heartfelt apology. "I sincerely apologize for the mistake I made. Especially to the bus driver, I admit that the PNP coaster vehicle swerved incorrectly to the left. In bad faith, I drove into the bus lane and ended up hitting the rear of the coaster, which caused the collision," Bredico expressed, taking full responsibility for his actions.

This incident highlights ongoing issues with traffic enforcement and public accountability within law enforcement agencies, as the PNP moves to address the fallout from the viral event.
