PRO-7 Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Gambling Across Central Visayas
In a significant enforcement push, the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 has escalated its campaign against illegal gambling activities throughout Central Visayas. According to recent data released by the agency, a total of 452 individuals were apprehended during the month of March 2026 alone. This crackdown underscores the region's commitment to upholding law and order in the face of persistent illicit operations.
Breakdown of Arrests and Operations
Of those arrested, 321 were identified as gamblers, while 131 served as ushers and collectors for illegal numbers games, commonly known as illegal swertres. The operations specifically targeted and dismantled illegal betting and hantak setups, which have been proliferating in various communities. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to curb the negative social impacts associated with gambling.
Motivations Behind the Crackdown
The intensified operations were prompted by complaints from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), which reported a decline in its revenue due to funds being diverted to illegal operators. In response, PRO-7 has taken decisive action, filing 238 criminal cases in court against the suspects for violations of Presidential Decree 1602. Additionally, authorities confiscated a total of P65,943, believed to be proceeds from the illegal gambling activities.
Leadership Calls for Public Vigilance
Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan, chief of PRO-7, has issued a public appeal urging citizens to avoid the vice of gambling, highlighting its detrimental effects on families and community well-being. He emphasized that the fight against illegal gambling is not just a legal matter but a social imperative to protect vulnerable individuals from financial ruin and familial discord.
Future Commitments and Regional Impact
PRO-7 has pledged to continue its monitoring and operational efforts across the entire region to ensure peace and order in every community. This ongoing campaign aims to disrupt illegal networks and promote a safer environment, reinforcing the agency's dedication to proactive law enforcement. The success of these operations serves as a warning to other potential offenders while reassuring residents of the police's vigilance.
