Kyle Lowry signed a one-day contract with the Toronto Raptors on July 8, 2026, allowing him to retire as a member of the franchise where he spent nine seasons and won an NBA championship. The 40-year-old point guard concluded a 20-year NBA career that included stints with five teams.
Lowry's Journey to Retirement
Lowry entered the NBA as the 24th overall pick by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2006 draft. He played for the Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Raptors, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers over his career. His most impactful years came with Toronto from 2012 to 2021, where he helped lead the Raptors to their first NBA title in 2019.
"This is a special moment for me and my family," Lowry said according to the team announcement. "Toronto will always be home."
Legacy with the Raptors
Lowry averaged 17.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game during his tenure with the Raptors. He was a six-time NBA All-Star, with five selections coming as a member of the Raptors. The one-day contract ensures he will officially retire as a Raptor, honoring his contributions to the franchise's historic championship run.
Raptors president Masai Ujiri praised Lowry's impact, stating, "Kyle is the heart and soul of this organization. We are thrilled to bring him back to retire in the jersey where he made history."
