This groundbreaking innovation, also known as Satellite-to-Phone (Sat2Phone), allows standard mobile phones to connect directly to orbiting satellites without needing any special equipment or attachments.
These extensive tests represent a proactive initiative by Globe to deliver next-generation connectivity to the Philippines' most isolated and difficult-to-serve regions. The goal is to ensure that communities located far beyond the reach of conventional cell towers can finally enjoy reliable communication.
Building on Pioneering Milestones
Globe has already established a strong track record in this field, achieving several national firsts. The company successfully conducted the first satellite SMS and voice service trials in the country and has held multiple demonstrations proving the practical capabilities of Sat2Phone technology.
The current phase of testing utilizes more advanced Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology, specifically the 3GPP Pre-release 17 standard. This is a critical step in preparing for the future commercial launch of satellite-to-phone services for the public.
In a significant recent development, Globe completed a live pilot trial with satellite service provider Lynk Global. This test successfully demonstrated voice call functionality using Lynk's satellite network, showing strong potential for wider implementation in the near future.
