Globe & Starlink Launch First DTC Satellite Service in SE Asia
Globe, Starlink Bring Satellite-to-Mobile to Philippines

In a landmark move for digital connectivity, Globe Telecom has officially partnered with SpaceX's Starlink to introduce the first Direct to Cell (DTC) satellite service in Southeast Asia. The ceremonial signing, witnessed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on January 16, 2026, at The Globe Tower in Taguig, signals a new era for universal mobile access across the Philippine archipelago.

A New Era of Connectivity for Remote Communities

Globe, the Philippines' leading mobile network operator, becomes the first company to market Starlink's DTC service in the country and the wider region. Starting this year, this breakthrough technology will allow Filipinos with standard, unmodified LTE mobile phones to access essential data, video, voice, messaging apps, and SMS anywhere they have a clear view of the sky.

This service is set to revolutionize communication in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs), which are often found across the nation's more than 7,600 islands. It directly addresses the mobile coverage gaps that have left an estimated 4% of the population without any terrestrial network access.

Building Resilience and Digital Inclusion

The partnership leverages Starlink's constellation of over 650 low-Earth orbit satellites, which act like cell towers in space. This technology is designed not to replace, but to complement existing ground-based infrastructure, providing a critical backup layer during emergencies.

In times of extreme weather or natural disasters, when traditional networks often fail, the DTC service will help maintain essential communication for affected individuals and first responders. It also enables access to vital digital government services through platforms like the eGov App, fostering greater inclusion for rural and maritime communities.

Leadership Vision for a Connected Nation

"This partnership with Starlink marks a historic step in our mission to build a digital inclusive nation," said Carl Cruz, President and CEO at Globe. He emphasized that connectivity is a modern-day utility and a lifeline. "By extending mobile reach through satellite technology, we are ensuring that every Filipino, whether in bustling cities or in the most remote barangays, has access to essential communication."

Globe's initiative reflects its continued commitment to investing in advanced technologies that support the government's goal of connecting all Filipinos. Starlink's DTC service, already proven in emergencies globally by delivering millions of SMS and alerts, now partners with Globe to empower Filipino households, businesses, and communities with consistent, accessible connectivity, regardless of location.
